Coal Country Households are Exceptionally Pro-Renewable Energy

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Today brings a lot of great news from the job and labor sectors, including some new statistics showing that U.S. and German solar industries both employ more people than the whole U.S. steel industry, and a very uplifting story about labor leaders and environmentalists joining forces in West Virginia to end mountaintop removal coal mining.

One of the key organizations involved in this effort, Appalachian Voices has been instrumental in the release of a powerful new documentary called “The Last Mountain,” directed by Bill Haney and promoted by none other than Robert F. Kennedy, one of the attorneys defending the community against Massey Coal.

In reading about this community’s struggle, we found this fantastic poll (pdf) that Appalachian Voices conducted not too long ago. It found that voters in the Appalachian region roundly reject the hollow “jobs versus environment” argument Big Coal puts forward and actually sees renewable energy as the key to long-term economic growth in the region. Labor and environment, they say, is a match made in heaven.” Music to our ears.
