#7 – Kenneth David Lee Home, Los Angeles

When architect Kenneth David Lee designed his own home, he incorporated sustainability in every way that he could– including solar panels on the roof. These solar panels provide 50-75% of the energy the home uses, and fit in nicely with the aesthetics of the modern design. Image: Erhard Pfeiffer, Fabrik Magazine.
#8 – Activehouse, Denmark

Like the Activehouse in Austria at the top of the post, this house produces more energy than it consumes– even in cold, cloudy Denmark. Fifty square meters of solar cells generate electricity, while seven square meters of solar collectors heat water for the home. Image: Adam Mørk, Activehouse.info.
#9 – Connecticut Home with Sunpower Panels

This beautiful home in Westport, Connecticut, was retrofitted with a 5 kW solar system using SunPower’s 225 watt solar panels. The installation was awarded SunPower’s “Intelegant Award for Excellence” in 2008. This type of solar panel is highly efficient, so it works well on homes with less roof space. #10 – SRS solar roofing tiles, Palm Springs, CA

This house in Palm Springs, California, shows off an alternative to solar panels– solar roofing tiles that blend into a tiled roof. These are made by SRS Energy. See our article on the different types of solar panels for more detail about solar roofing tiles, also known as “building-integrated photovoltaics.” Image: SRS Energy.
