One Block Off the Grid goes Canvassing!
Monday, June 8th, 2009There are many ways in which we are quite different from most other organizations. We have a team of people whose backgrounds vary from solar salesman to real estate agent to campaign organizer to summer camp counselor to city government policy maker. Each of us serves a very unique purpose, and it is incredible watching us work together. Well, it’s incredible to me.

And my favorite part of 1BOG’s extended family has to be the field team. We’ve got people who are out knocking on doors (check out the volunteer page to see them strategize), and getting the word out about our program launching in Oakland and Berkeley.
You think the 1BOG team has diverse backgrounds? This past weekend we had volunteers and organizers meeting to set tactical strategy for their weekend canvass. In one room we had an interior designer, a journalist, a green activist, a business school student, a biochemical engineer, a political campaign organizer, and a college student.
When some people think about “solar” and “green technology”, they have an image in their mind of the type of people that would respond best to that stuff. We’re out to prove that image wrong, door-knock by door-knock!
Hit up the volunteer page if you wanna bring your skills to a very diverse table that is helping get the word out in communities all over the country.
Putting the “Collective” in Collective Solar Buying
Wednesday, May 13th, 2009
People have been asking us here at 1 Block Off the Grid how we grow these solar energy buying clubs – how we create the “communities” that are so essential to our programs. There are lots of ways! We are in the business of organizing people, and giving them the tools to organize each other.
Organizing is a tried and true art form. It means calling up your neighbors and friends and meeting at your town hall. It means writing letters to your community leaders, and standing on street corners, cheering for your cause, whatever your cause is. It means taking a Saturday afternoon, rolling up your sleeves, putting on your walking shoes, and knocking on the doors in your neighborhood, talking to folks about the things that are important to you. The things that are important to us, of course, have to do with solar power, and with the renewable energy movement! And we, at 1BOG, are putting our money where our mouth is!
We are going canvassing for solar energy this weekend!
If you’re in the Bay Area, check out our Facebook event about it!
And if you’re not in the Bay Area, forward it to your friends!
We plan on going through the neighborhood, spreading the word about 1BOG, serving as “boots on the ground”, and inviting participants and friends to join!
Oh, and, If you haven’t seen this yet, check it out to find out more. Word.
